By building the forecastle higher the tropeotubes could be integrated into the forecastle. This provided protection of the tubes against impact of seawater. At the same time it improved the seaworthyness of the boats. Starting with type "S 26" up to type "S 701" the German S-boats were equipped with so called "Staurudern" (trimtabs) which at correct adjustment caused a higher speed of ca. one knob at the same motorperformance and suppressed a part of the lowering-effect of the stern at higher speeds. Arrangement of propellers, mainrudder and trimtabs is described in H. Fock: Schnellboote Vol. 2 on pages 78 through 81. The advantages with respect to sailing-performance of the boats are called "Lürssen-Effect".

The command-position was behind the bridgehouse. The forecastle-gun (20mm) was retrofitted on all boats. The boats "S 27" and "S 29" were later retrofitted with a 3,7mm gun on the quarterdeck. The boats "S 26" and "S 28" of the 1. SFltl were retrofitted 1943 at Constanta with a scull-bridge and a 40mm-Bofors on the quarterdeck.
