By building the forecastle higher the tropeotubes could be integrated into the forecastle. This provided protection of the tubes against impact of seawater. At the same time it improved the seaworthyness of the boats. The command-position was behind the bridgehouse. The forecastle-gun (20mm) was retrofitted on all boats. The boats "S 27" and "S 29" were later retrofitted with a 3,7mm gun on the quarterdeck. The boats "S 26" and "S 28" of the 1. SFltl were 1943 retrofitted with a scull-bridge and a 40mm-Bofors on the quarterdeck at Constanta.
