"S 144" was the first S-boat which fell into the hands of the Allies. During the bomb attack on Le Havre on 14.06.1944 it had been jammed under a sunken drydock,  in which "S 169" had been turned over and destroyed by a bomb hit, and had initially not been salvageable. It was salvaged by the USN in February 1945 and was made provisionally seaworthy again. It was brought to Plymouth where it was testet and then by LST to New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York, USA where it was subject to further testing. This boat hab been considered to be "S 169" until 2010 when it could be identified by contacts between Förderverein Museums-Schnellboot and Chip Marshall, Silver Spring, Maryland, USA, via the picture below as "S 144" (9. SFltl-coat of arms under the bridge - "S 169" had belonged to the 4. SFltl).
