S-Boats in the Kriegsmarine

Lettercode of the 8. S-Flotilla

The 8. S-Flotilla was put in order the first time on 01.11.1941 at Kiel. Commander of the 8. S-Flotilla was Kptlt. Georg-Stuhr Christiansen. The flotilla was deployed in the area Kolabight/Murmansk with Kirkenes as naval base. The flotilla was disbanded on 10.07.1942.

The 8. S-Flotilla was put in order again in November 1942 at Kiel, it was transferred to Norway in December 1942 and came back to Germany during the summer of 1943; from mid September it was in action in the west. Commander of the flotilla was KorvKpt. Felix Zymalkowski.

TEh coat of arms of the flotilla was aquired at Bodø. The letter-code of the boats from the 8. SFltl used the intials of the first name of the commanding officers on the side of the bridge-house and in the later boats on the side of the scull-bridge, in addition the boats were showing the initials of the COs on the stern.

The letter-code was changed with the change in command but not with a short-time replacement.

However, according to the manning-list of 15th August 1944 it must be "S 193" commissioned by Oblt.z.S. Horst Schuur on 28.06.1944 at Schlichting.
