Lettercode of the 8. S-Flotilla
The 8. S-Flotilla was put in order the first time on 01.11.1941 at Kiel. Commander of the 8. S-Flotilla was Kptlt. Georg-Stuhr Christiansen. The flotilla was deployed in the area Kolabight/Murmansk with Kirkenes as naval base. The flotilla was disbanded on 10.07.1942.
The 8. S-Flotilla was put in order again in November 1942 at Kiel, it was transferred to Norway in December 1942 and came back to Germany during the sommer of 1943; from mid September it was in action in the west. Commander of the flotilla was KorvKpt. Felix Zymalkowski.
The letter-code of the boats from the 8. SFltl used the intials of the first name of the commanding officers on the side of the bridge-house and in the later boats on the side of the scull-bridge, in addition the boats were showing the initials of the COs on the stern.
The letter-code was changed with the change in command but not with a short-time replacement.

"S 199" with Letter-Code "AQ" on the Stern
"S 127" with Letter-Code "JASPER" " on the Scull-Bridge
At a later point in time ObFähnr.z.S. Fanger took command of boat "S 118".

According to information of Schlichting-Shipyards the above picture, which we received thanks to the help of Gunnar Paulig, shows "S 199" with the letters "HS" for Horst Schuur on the stern. However, according to the manning-list of 15th January 1945 it may well be "S 193" built by Schlichting in 1944.
No pictures are available to us of the boats of which codes have not been listed.
