S-Boats in the Kriegsmarine 1935 - 1945
Allied Sales of KM-S-Boats and
Developments
The Soviets included the S-boats of
their war-loot and possibly four almost completed new constructins of the Schlichting
Shipyard, Construction-Nr.1229 ("S
229"), Construction-Nr.1230 ("S 230"), Construction-Nr.1231 ("S 231")
and Construction-Nr.1232 ("S 232"), which had been towed to the Pötenitz
Bay end of April or early May and probably fell into the hands of the Soviets into
their fleet and sailed them until the 1960s.
The two West-Allies, USA and Great Britain,
treated their loot in a totally different way:
England sold most of the boats for demolition;
the Royal Navy took over only the boats "S 19" as target-ship, "S 83"
for GMSA at Cuxhaven, "S 130" as "FBB 5130", "S 208"
as "FPB 5208" and
"212" as "FPB 5212". Boats "S 130" and
"S 208" sailed later in the BBFPS (the so-called Group Klose) and
were handed over to the Bundesmarine in 1956. Sold to private was "S
67" as "Torüs" and one other boat (no. unknown) as "Rugmos",
to Denmark "S 115" as
"T 46", which were only used as a sparepart-store, and
"S 207" as "T 61", later "Skaden", as well
as to Norway "S 196" as a sparepart-store, which was sold
to Denmark in 1951.
The USA transferred boats "S 218" and "S 706"
to America as test-vehicles, sold "S
701" to private as "Mijn Vrijbuiter" (H. Platenga,
Amsterdam, further wherabouts unknown), and 12 boats 1947 to Denmark as
well as 15 boats to Norway
Use of the former KM-boats in the Royal Norwegian
Navy
Out of the 14 boats bought from the Allies 10 were
modernized and used until 1951 as follows:

"S 10", "S 21", S"S 48",
and S 196" were only used as sparepart-stores. "S 196" was
sold as such to Denmark in 1951.
The boats "Kvikk" and
"Snar" after they had torn off at Horten in storm during
winter 1948/49 were so badly damaged by the stranding at Østøya that
they were broken off. They were stricken from the list of Norwegian warships in 1950. The boats "S 10" to "S 48" until then
only used as sparepart-stores and "Rap" (ex "S
174") were broken off 1950, boat "Tarva" (ex "S
76") was canibalized and used as a target-ship until the 1970s. The
other boats in service of the Norwegian Navy and the sparepart-store (ex "S 196")
were sold to Denmark in 1951.
Use of the former KM-boats in
the Royal Danish Navy (Søværnet)
Of the 15 boats
bought from the Allies 12 were modernized (equipped with radars) and
constituded "T 51"-class (1947 - 1951).

The
boats had the measurements: Length = 34,94 m, beam = 5,28 m, draft =
1,67 m at a displacement of 100 resp. 117 t. The complement consisted of 21
men.
Since
the boats were of KM-types "S 38" and "S 100" they had
different propulsion plants what resulted in different maximum speeds and
actonradii. Also they had different artillery-weapons.

With the second
modernisation in 1955 all boats were fitted with Mercedes Benz Motors MB 518
with 3000 hp each and a standard weaponfit, i.e. a 40 mm M/48 LvSa
on the quarterdeck and a 20 mm M/39 LvSa on the forecastle. Also they got an
artillery-director on a new superstructure. The rigid life-rafts were
replaced by the "Viking" inflatable life-rafts in 1955.

The
Danish development - the "Flyvefisken"-Class (1954 -
1974)
Because of the good experiences made with the
boats of „Glenten“-Class Denmark was building a new class of
boats at the Danish stateowned shipyards, Orlogsværftet, Kopenhagen, and
Frederiksund-Værftet, on the basis of Lürssen-plans with a more
slanted bow and little more beam under the name „Flyvefisken“-Class.
Three of the units were paid for by the USA.

The
boats measured as follows: Length = 35,90 m, beam = 5,50 m, draft = 2,10
m, and a displacement of 132,2 t. The were propelled by three Mercedes Benz MB 518 B
with 3000 hp each on three shafts and developed a maximum speed of 42,8 kn;
the actionradius was 760 nm at a speed of 32 knots.
The
armament consisted of 1 x 40mm M/48 LvSa in the rear and 1 x 20 mm M/42 LvSa
on the forecastle and two rocket-launchers for flares on the sides of
the 40 mm gun as well as two bow-torpedotubes 53,3 cm with two
spare-torpedoes on deck behind them. Additionally they had mine-tracks
on the quarterdeck.
in spite of the hint for additional torpedo-tubes at Fock: S-Boote
Vol. 3 page 124 creating the impression that the boats were fitted with
those, the Danish Navy limited itself to the solution with two bow-tubes
and spare-torpedoes behind them.
Development from "Flyvefisken"-Class -
the "Falken"-Class (1962 -
1978)
As
replacement for the boats of the "Flyvefisken"-class acted
from 1962 on four new constructions by Orlogsværftet, Kopenhagen, the "Falken"-Class.
Originally eight units were planned, however, the number had to be
reduced due to cost reasons. Two units were paid for by the USA.
The hull of these units reminds of the hull of the
German "Eismöwe“-Class.
