S-Boats in the Kriegsmarine 1935 - 1945

 Lettercodes in the 6. SFltl

The 6. SFltl was formed in March 1941. Flotille-Commander was KKpt Albrecht Obermaier (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold 06.06.44) from 03.41 to 07.44; his successor was Kptlt. (KKpt) Jens Matzen (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold 27.01.45; Ritterkreuz 18.03.45) from 07.44 to 05.45.

The Areas of Deployment of the Flotilla were: 

1941 – 42  Northsea/English Channel
 1942 Norway
1942 – 44  Northsea/Englisher Channel
 1944  Finnish Bight
1944 – 45 English Channel/Northsea (Hoofden)

Marking of the Boats:

According to the statement of the last commanding officer of „S 223“, the former Oblt.z.S. Enno Brandi, all boats towards the end of war besides of the coat of arms of the flotilla were marked on both sides of the hull beneath the bridge in big black letters with the initial of the last name of the commanding officer. However, he does not remenber how it was handled when the same letter appeared more than once as in Brandi, Breithaupt and Bucher.

In March 1942 boat  "S 74" upon commissioning at Lürssen was received, so that the foltilla sailed to the deployment in Norway (April until July 1942) with the following boats:

Some boats showed in addition to the letters on the hull a boat-coat -of-arms on the forward side of the bridgehouse as for example "S 76" (Oblt.z.S. Meyering) a coat-of-arms which found its repetition in the coat-of-arms of the 2. S-Squadron when FKpt Meyering was forming the new squadron.
